The topic of faith
Reading other's blog is evil. I was skimping through Choon Lee's blog and I read his latest journal which inspires me to blog an entry on the topic of faith and maybe touch a wee-bit on Christianity.
Incidentally, I was watching an episode of "The Simpsons" on Saturday evening, talking about "raptures". What if one day I open my eyes and see that those Christ-believers have been "taken into heaven" (read: rapture) and then I began to understand the whole situation of God and Christianity? Under such circumstances, how will I react or response.. God knows.
It is hilariously funny in one scene which they show a Chinese monk stuck in the middle of a flood and he was so upset about his faithfulness towards God but he was not the chosen ones to enter the gate of heaven. This links back to a particular paragraph which Choon Lee wrote, "One particular interpretation i love (to argue) the most is the one where one can only go to heaven if you believe in God. How abt all those gd guys i know who are not believers?"
Taking with a pinch of salt, it triggered my laughing nerves, bringing back flashbacks of the Simpsons episode. These 3 words "believing in God" has many implications and interpretations ,whichever you prefer, like issues between believers and nonbelievers. Try convincing an Atheist that God exists, he probably laughs it out and say he worship Science. Then again, ask an Indian or a Chinese or a Maori if they believe in God, they probably reply you with amusement, "Which God?"
I think the guiding principle of faith is a belief system which one finds it accepting and religiously follow through it.
Surely, these people I've mentioned are faithful and we cannot deny them of such allegations.
A series of questions revolving around the issue of our Creator and His existence have been examined and many people till date are still unable to search for a perfect answer.
Questions such as the existence of Heaven and Hell, life after death, the existence of God and His omnipresence/omnipotence etc etc. Theologists have been formulating theories of the unknown and the uncertain. No one ever proclaims to have know the answers, only theories.
Fundamentalists are using the vulnerability of uncertainty and insecurity to strike back on others' faith.
I like the argument seconded to Choon Lee by a Christian blogger of the definition of good. I shall quote her arguments as follows "... how do you define good? Nothing is permanent on earth, everything is transient. Your fren being good today does not mean he will not do something bad or unexpectable tomorrow."
Her perception of humanity is that men are evil by at large whereas Choon Lee perceives that ALL Christ-believers albeit some being evil go to heaven. Somehow, in some way, they believe in the concept of Heaven and Hell. But why? Who taught them the concept of heaven and hell? Why do they reckon that there is heaven and hell?
Human beings have been searching "the way, the truth and the life" because we are given the authority to think. The process of thoughts is a powerful medium in affecting us and the surroundings and faith is all about that.
May I reiterate that faith is not about understanding but about believing. I may understand how a computer works but if I don't believe that the computer will work, it won't work obviously.
The Christian blogger is right after all. I shall do a direct quoting and here you go:
And no, it (the Bible) is NOT interpreted by Man, it is ordained by God, it is commanded by God. Said by Jesus himself, the man/God who fulfilled over 300 prophecies. And do you know what that means? By saying that it (the Bible) is interpreted by Man, you have already shown a biased as well as incomplete understanding. Many controversial misunderstandings raised by scholars / philosophers / anybody are simply because they are criticizing something they dont even know well enough. For those who are interested in reading the entire journal entry and the counter arguments, click here.
Not understanding is one problem but not believing is a bigger problem. Concluding this lengthy entry, I like to share a phrase, fondly used by my JC tutor, with you "Ignorance and arrogance are the deadliest weapons that a man can have".
May whatever_you_believe_in bless you!
